What to consider when volunteering
Volunteering is defined as the act of
- voluntarily
- donating one’s time and effort for the benefit of others
- without rewards
While volunteering has many positive aspects,
it can lead to a codependent relationship in which we find value in ourselves for prioritizing others and sacrificing ourselves.
(if it goes too much)
In my opinion, volunteering is
- (even if it’s hard) something we can provide for free with fun and interesting
- this action ultimately benefits others.
The motivation is not
- doing something because it will benefit others,
but rather something that is voluntary and starts from wanting to do it ourselves.
Being externally motivated can lead to problems such as codependency and the expectation of something in return for what we have given for free.
It’s nice to receive words of gratitude, but that’s not the goal, it’s just something extra.
There are many different jobs in the world, and there are people who need support.
It’s impossible to know everything or provide support, but it’s possible to broaden our horizons and contribute, even if only little by little.(Through volunteer work, we can experience something new and know)
Change comes from taking the first step, and a new world opens up.
