Considering the direction of population growth amid increasing efficiency
Advances in technology are driving efficiency in all areas.
Since there are only 24 hours in a day, more efficient social systems allow us to make better use of our time.
However, it is also true that increased efficiency will result in the elimination of some jobs.
If the number of newly created jobs exceeds the number of jobs that are eliminated, there is no problem.
However, if the number of newly created jobs is less than the number of jobs that are eliminated,
some people will no longer be able to make a living due to their work.
On the other hand, from the perspectives of the economy, tax revenue, and social security,
a growing population is considered desirable.
The more the population increases,
- The more prosperous the economy will become,
- Increased tax revenues will be achieved,
- More generous social security will be achieved.
For this reason, various measures are currently being taken to address the declining birthrate.
However,
- Job elimination due to efficiency
- Population growth
If jobs become less efficient, people will compete for a smaller share.
If the global population is expanded even further,
it is predicted that the world population will continue to grow.
However, since the Earth's resources are limited, countries will undoubtedly compete for them.
Japan is a resource-limited country.
(We are good at using our scarce resources efficiently.)
If we were to support our population with our own resources rather than importing them from overseas,
our population would decline even further.
(Japan's current population is 100 million, but at the end of the Edo period,
when the country was closed to the outside world, the population was around 30 million.)
For Japan to continue growing its population in the future, it will definitely need resources.
While Japan imports resources from overseas,
we also need to consider whether the people of countries that once had those resources are able to survive.
I believe we need to consider how we should rebuild our social systems in the face of a declining population, without relying on population growth.
