How do you plan your second half of life?
I read The Second Half of Life (by Arthur C. Brooks).
I'm currently 41 years old, which is what we call middle age.
I picked up this book hoping to gain some insight as I enter the second half of my life.
The book divides human intelligence into two categories:
- Fluid intelligence, which peaks in youth
- Crystallized intelligence, which develops with age
and argues that it's important to transition from fluid to crystallized intelligence in the second half of life.
Fluid intelligence refers to reasoning, flexible thinking, and the ability to solve novel problems.
(It's innate intelligence and is related to reading comprehension and mathematical ability)
This ability peaks in adulthood and declines rapidly from your 30s and 40s.
If they achieve success with this intelligence in their youth,
they'll cling to that experience, resist their declining ability with each passing year,
and gradually become more hardworking.
(But there are also more cases where results don't come.)
Meanwhile, crystallized intelligence is the ability to utilize accumulated knowledge learned in the past,
and it apparently improves with age.
This is the intelligence that allows them to understand the meaning and application of facts they created in their youth as they get older.
In the second half of our life, it's important to take the time to look back at the internal knowledge and experiences we've cultivated and think about how to utilize them.
